Ecourage Yourself in the Lord
Encourage Yourself in the Lord

By Wayne McDonald

I Samuel 30:6, “David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because the souls of them all were bitterly grieved, each for his sons and daughters. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God.” David and his army were out fighting battles.
When they returned they discovered that the enemy had burned their city and took their wives, sons and daughters captive. All of the army cried until they had no more strength to weep. This is a classic case of how the enemy works; he waits until you are tired and vulnerable to strike.

These men were exhausted from battle. David now had the opportunity to start to question his leadership ability, “Did I make the right decision? Am I a good leader?” His world looked like it was crumbling around him and on top of it all his army was talking about killing him. What an opportunity to fall apart and just give up. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

There will be times in every one of our lives that there will be no one to encourage us. It will appear like our world is being turned upside down and people might even question our ability to lead. That is the time to do what David did. Encourage yourself in the Lord. That is true maturity when there is no one to be your cheerleader and you rise above your dark situation.

In I Samuel 30:18 David made the decision to go after the enemy and the word says, “David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken and rescued his two wives.” His secret to success was encouraging himself in the Lord. Don’t wait for other people to pat you on the back and tell you it is going to be ok. Rise up and encourage and strengthen yourself in the Lord your God.

David did not just recover everything that belonged to him but he also took all of the spoils that the enemy had. We are going to recover all that the enemy has stolen from us; our joy, peace, and finances. We are going to take it all back. If you are feeling defeated or discouraged. If you are questioning yourself and your abilities, get up and encourage and strengthen yourself in the Lord. He will empower you to do the impossible and lead you into victory!
